Perhaps this new service has better titles, better exclusive content, or a better interface with more personalized suggestions than Netflix. In order to ensure that their content can stream into homes effectively, ISPs could make them pay for an internet fastlane, which is something this startup can’t afford. Even though these entrepreneurs created an objectively better service, the barriers to entry are too high. Now imagine this effect across the entire economy. Great ideas in all sectors might be snuffed out if only the larger players are able to pay ISPs to carry their data. Let’s say that the people in these markets do have the money to pay for a fastlane. What is to stop an established competitor from purchasing exclusive rights to traveling across cable lines at fast speeds, leaving smaller companies unable to even buy the bandwidth their business might need? The market could implode, services could become consolidated, and ironically the economy as a whole might start to resemble the ISP market. For all consumers who enjoy firms competing for their business by offering better things for lower prices, this would be bad news.

A free and open internet is essential for entrepreneurism and economic growth. An enlightened, empowered populace needs both to speak and listen to other points of view. This is not possible if voices are muffled, but freedom rings when voices are allowed to carry. The telecom powers that be are too large, and are a threat to consumers.
