Immigrant Wilderness Adventure

Backpacking the Emigrant Wilderness, which runs along the spine of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, is one of my favorite experiences. The ten of us began our adventure in the evening, hiking from the trailhead to Camp Lake. On the way, storm clouds dropped a little rain but then gave way to scattered light over the surrounding peaks. After sunset, we climbed a high ridge above our campsite. The view West silhouetted trees under wisps of clouds.

The next day brought us to Gem Lake camp where we swam in cold mountain waters under granite cliffs. Some fished while others gathered wood for a fire. Sunlight retreated and evening fell as we ate dinner and talked; the dancing light of the campfire was mesmerizing.

There are many places I hold dear to my heart such as traveling to the mountains, visiting my grandma or going down to the Russian River and swimming in the freezing green river. But one particular place that stands out in my memory is Mount Shastina. We have gone to Mount Shastina during times of snow and during times of intense heat, which has exposed me to different activities that depend upon the climate. I have been going there, to McCloud, which is North of Mt. Shasta, with my family for as long as I can remember. In the center of a desert lies our rustic cabin with 3 bedrooms and a nice fireplace to keep us warm.…

As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…

In Mount Allegro, the author paints America in light that reflects what and how the immigrants defined it during their struggle to assimilate. The Mangione family soon learned that ‘America’ was more than a piece of land. They found, as Gruesz defines, “…the meaning of America might be said to be a national characteristic” (Gruesz 17). In this novel, it is presented as a goal that immigrants are striving to reach. And if you reach it, you and others can sincerely consider yourself a genuine part of America.…

It is no secret that the idea of wilderness grips every American citizen. Some authors including, William Cronon, have gone to great lengths to explain American infatuation with the wild. Cronon in his article The Trouble with Wilderness, Or Getting Back to the Wrong Nature, presents the sublime nature of wilderness as one of the reasons Americans imagine nature. I believe both I, Krakauer and Chris McCandless disagree with William’s Cronon’s assessment of the American psyche. Rather than seeing the wilderness as, “rare places on earth where one had more chance than elsewhere to glimpse the face of God” (Cronon), Krakauer, McCandless and most Americans believe wilderness is a place to find yourself.…

Before this course I have taken other anthropology courses which taught me that they have lived here for a long time. I have always been interested most in Native American history and have had a good grasp on the timeline of their "arrival". I assumed that their arrival in Michigan would be a little bit later than their initial arrival in North America. I figured so because the journey over would take a little bit before moving on from exploring the northern west coast areas. Something that I found extremely surprising was the age that people get married in a Hunter-Gatherer lifestyle.…

The one advantage of California's monotonously sunny weather is that it's always a lovely time to hike. After moving to California, I developed my affinity for the outdoors, as I can practically see all types of landscapes in the world just by going on an assortment of hikes throughout the state. I've learned that my fellow hikers will always have kind souls, because they're always willing to share their water or take a break with me as I catch my breath. Hiking is my perfect getaway, and luckily, I know I can find it on the east coast,…
