Startled, I looked up to see Rose staring at me intently. Of course she sees my nervousness. She comes closer puts her hands on my knees and says,

“You will look amazing if you do this, but, you don’t have to, I support you either way.” Her famous line, “I support you.” This explains the depth of our friend, not only can she sense my nervousness but she truly lends her support to me no matter the decision. I give her smile and say, “I did promise you.” The barber starts measuring my hair.

“I feel aberrant.” I say to Rose, “I always convince you to do these types of things!”

“Well, your reign has come to an end, now I must attempt to conjure up circumstances that make you squirm a little.” We both giggle because we know the truth behind

While no one in my family holds the current office of governor, a relative held the first office as governor in Plymouth. He died shortly after coming over on the Mayflower, however, my family still remembers him. My family’s old money accumulates more and more throughout the years and provides an ever expanding labyrinth of gardens for Rose and I to have a picnic in.

We arrive at the florid estate just in time to see lavish flower pots large enough to require multiple carriers and so beautiful I stop and turn to look, a costly decision since my mother and a swarm servants approach me with faces that look as though they require answers. I step over to the truck delivering these beautiful creations in an effort to appear busy by admiring the lavender and fern in their lushly perfect compilations as my mother

Some responses have come back, however, no scheduled interviews yet.”

“How have you survived without Martha?”

“Usually one of the kitchen girls comes up to help me, but, I wish to hire my own maid. Don has already given me wage parameters so I hope to make an offer soon.”

“You must hire her before the wedding so she can help and take the stress off of the day. It is also one of the first steps in building your own home, how exciting!”

Rose and I finally make it to the Italian gardens and lily pond. We take off our hosiery and sit on the decorative cement wall and dip our toes in the water to relax from the August heat as we continue our conversation. In the distance Rose sees a portion of the kitchen staff coming with our lunch and looks at me for direction.

“Just stay here.” I

Throughout the book, there are many examples that support. One of them being, LaVaughn’s feelings about making the best about everything she has can be seen as the theme of the story when she realizes it: “And I get the point of it this time. / And I want to put my arms all the way around Jolly / in congratulation / and I’, happy she’s so angry / and I’ proud of her she made it clearer than my Mom ever did / with all the preaching and huffing / and bootstraps.” (Wolff 173). The story that Jolly tells LaVaughn teaches her that she has to make the best out of everything, which LaVaughn didn’t understand. Similarly, LaVaughn learns another thing when she is thinking about the decision on whether she should continue to babysit for Jolly and she considers, “You should help the ones that need you.…

I have felt, but never truly experienced life in poverty. I have heard my parents’ stories of how their only meals at school consisted of rice with picked cabbage in a small jar from home. Of how they had to haul baskets of oranges from their farm in the mountain before the sun even rose (that was my mom with absolutely no upper body strength), or of how they sometimes ate chili peppers straight from the tree as their only meal (which sparked my theory of why northern China likes everything ridiculously spicy). So I came from a background where I found myself incredibly lucky and privileged to have all these opportunities ahead of me, all due to the harsh conditions and labor my parents went through. So I figured, I might as well do something meaningful with my career, right?…

We would be at the top of the stairs by the time we heard “can one of you come make salad while the other sets the table.” Because we knew that she would rather send her voice ringing across the house to reach us rather then attempt to ask my dad to help. For if she asked her answer would be met with a denial or a complaint followed by the words “tell the girls to do it.” And that we did each night, proud of what a great help we knew ourselves to be as we both accomplished our one set task. By then there wasn’t enough time to go back upstairs so in that limbo between our chore and the completion of our mother’s we would sit down on the couch and cuddle with dad or dance around the kitchen pretending to be useful while she worked magic. Suddenly the words “tutti a tavola a mangiare, per favore” could be heard (mother channeling her inner Lidia Bastianich) signifying that dinner was ready and headed for the table so we better be there to meet it. We would all take our places at the table either my sister or I had proudly set and listen to the baby in the family recite a Grace that she had learned in pre-school, “Thank you for the food we eat, thank you for the world so sweet, thank you for the birds that sing, thank you for everything.…
