Immaturity In The Great Bobby

What is maturity, is it reacting to consequences or just moving through life? In The First Part Last Bobby is a usual teenager with one exception he's going to be a father. Except for one problem, he isn't that mature. He gets his girlfriend Nia pregnant, gets caught "tagging", and runs away from where his childhood was because he couldn't bear the stress of the memories. Bobby's first sign of immaturity was him not thinking about consequences with Nia. Bobby and Nia had a very intimate relationship which lead to a humungous consequence. That consequence was that Nia became pregnant and Bobby became a father. Bobby found this out on his Sixteenth birthday when he saw Nia sitting on his step and said " Bobby I've got something to tell you" (Johnson 6). Soon Nia starts experiencing aches and pains in muscles and has high blood pressure. Once Nia goes into labor and gives birth, she is diagnosed with eclampsia, which means she has entered an …show more content…
Bobby enjoyed tagging because it energized or relaxed him to do it. One day when Bobby was going to be late to school because of the baby he dropped the baby off with a friend called Coco and suddenly found extra time he wasn't used to having. What Bobby did with that time was collect four spray paint cans, go to a restaurant called Mineo's and then finally head to where he was tagging. When Bobby arrived to where he was tagging he decided to paint a picture of a young man and a baby going through life. That is until he saw a uniform that hauled him into the station and had to spend a night in a cell. The next day when Bobby was picked up from jail by his father he learns that he has to deal with an angry mom and daughter, which adds to his belief that he couldn't live in the city anymore to be a good father and solidifies his belief in the pain of to many

Frank Conroy’s memoir Stop Time is supposedly a coming of age story about fitting into the American male canon. It’s a recollection of Conroy’s life marbled with events that, in some cases, shock the reader with how revealing the novel is. Throughout the novel, it appears Conroy is “evolving” as a person, and the character Frank is maturing. However, I argue that despite all that happens in the stories Conroy tells, he has not grown much at all, and shows very little maturity; specifically, he shows this through his unending disregard of consequences. I define “maturity” as taking experiences from one’s past and learning from them in a constructive manner.…
