BUSSINESS ETHICS KANTS ‘SECOND FORMULATION OF THE CATEGORICAL IMRERATIVES COMMANDS Kant held that certain acts i.e. theft, cheating and murder were totally illegal and It doesn’t matter whether the action brings happiness to the doer. He further argued that every time we decide to take an action, we should ask ourselves; do I agree every act of a person is right? If the answer is no, we must not take the action. Another question that we must ask ourselves is, does everything I do value human beings rights or am I using people for my own benefits? Again if the answer is no, that action should not be performed. In his theory, Kant illustrated the idea of universal law. This refers to acting on the principles and values that a person is capable

Categorical imperative also which is a directive, commands unconditionally. i.e. Don’t cheat in exams. It means that even if the intended action of cheating may serve an individual interest, one can opt not to cheat. This theory of categorical imperative works in relation to moral worthiness of a person Kant on Moral Worth persons Kant argues that a person is either good or bad depending on the motivation he derives from his actions but not on the integrity of the actions. According Kant, a person can be morally upright but only if motivated by the morality. Moral worthiness occurs when a person does something because he knows that it is his duty to do, regardless of whether he is in agreement with it or not. According to Kant, a person is considered to be good at all times because it is his obligation to do good. Even if the person did not enjoy doing the act, it is better to do the act for the purpose of goodness derived. In the case of the accident that occurred to Valerie, The construction of the pool was solely responsibility of Sta-Rite industry and the company is aware of the leakage on the drain covers of the pool. Instead of using the screws, they are using snaps that do not sufficiently fit to solve the problem. This later led to injuries that occurred to Valerie Lakey. Applying the Kant’s theory, It is observed that the moral worthiness of that industry is to be questioned. They did not value human life by ignoring the leakage. Kant expresses that even if an action is not of any motivation to the person doing the act, it is better to do it for the purpose of the other people. Sometimes it might be expensive or cost more but as long as an act is good, it should be taken.
