In a world filled with false accusations and incorrect judgement, one must decide what is the truth and who to believe. In The Crucible written by Arthur Miller, thoughts of witchcraft circulate around the town of Salem. Abigail Williams, one of the lead girls spreading rumors, accused many people that she grew up around of witchcraft with no real evidence. Even though the accusations sound absurd, the townspeople start to question everyone around making sure that there is no witches in their perfect town. Miller uses this character to create a very typical man who is trusted very much by his town. Although Proctor made some mistakes, he is still seen as the tragic hero because of his bravery even is his last moments. After his wife is accused of witchcraft and framed for hurting Abigail Williams, John tries everything he can to preserve her name. He tries his hardest to get Mary Warren to confess that Abigail planted the needle in the poppet and then stabbed herself with the needle in the exact same place. He pleads, “My wife will never die for me! I will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me!”(II). He is still very guilty for the affair he had on his wife, and feels terrible that Abigail is framing her for something he did. He does not want her to die for what he did and will try everything he can to change her fate. This shows his undying love for his wife and how sorry he feels for his mistake. He is being a hero by trying to save his wife. He says in court with all the townspeople listening, “A man will not cast away his good name. You surely know that...but it is a whore 's vengeance, and you must see it now”(III). Proctor throws away his good name, which is highly respected in his town, so that his wife will not be tried. She is the woman who always puts others before herself, even when her own life is on the line. She is cheated on, lied to, and threatened by Abigail but she still tried to help everyone to the best of her ability. John cheated on her with her former servant girl, Abigail, but she still chose to forgive her husband because she knows that he is a good man that made a mistake. While having an argument between her and her husband she says, “I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you.
