Imitating Responsibly As humans we are unique. Humans, identical to all other creatures, evolved in a similar fashion to be where they are today. But unlike other living things, humans adapt, learn, and live differently. Humans have a quality that is so unique it separates them from everything else. And that quality is the ability to imitate. Susan Blackmore in “Strange Creatures” dives into the idea of human imitation and, “that imitation is what makes us special” (34). Blackmore provides the definition of imitation which is to copy exactly what the other person is doing and in doing so information is transferred from one to another. With this information the other person is influenced and he or she now has the power to further spread this …show more content…
He describes it as, “competition between genes” (Blackmore 34). Genes are spread based on what an individual does and how it moves from one to another to more. No one is evolving in the similar manner, it is the genes fighting to get reproduced. This is the gene’s eye view which is the world in the genes perspective. Memes are just like genes in the sense that they are also fighting to be reproduced and advance from one to another. Popular beliefs is a form that a meme can take; they can range from scientific or historic or to even something really silly. No matter what the meme or belief is accuracy is very significant. If someone is spreading a meme then they have the responsibility to make sure whatever they are sharing is precise. In addition the host is responsible for either accepting or rejecting the meme after pondering the legitimacy. Blackmore provides an example of a belief, that was very widely accepted until proven incorrect, “Before Copernicus and Galileo, people believed they lived at the centre of the universe in a world created especially for them by God. Gradually, we had to accept not only that the sun does not revolve around the earth, but that we live on some minor little planet in an ordinary galaxy in a vast universe of other galaxies” (Blackmore 38). This is a prime example of why the host of a meme should question the validity of this new knowledge. Accepting this responsibility can prevent misunderstandings and the dispersion of false information. A scientific television show, Mythbusters, is dedicated to taking popular beliefs and experimenting with them to see the validity of the information. They took on an internet meme in one of their episode; which was a challenge to eat a spoonful of cinnamon. This challenge has thousands of failures all over the internet who have had awful to dangerous reactions and was

Memes have been created as interesting form of cultural expression. They can appear to be very stupid, and a lot of them are, but they have the ability to make a commentary about what is going on in society whether it’s direct or in direct. Memes are like tiny satires, ridiculing the actions and words of some people in order to make some sort of point or even more often a joke. There are memes about athletes and sports, celebrities, and actions of a more general population (i.e. white girls, Republicans, etc.). The idea is that a phrase or an image is used in conjunction with either an image or phrase that is meant to make fun of the subject.…

The world is a vast place, filled with numerous individuals, all characterized by unique qualities. John Stuart Mill, a 19th century writer, philosopher, and businessman who placed great importance on those who find and offer new ideas, theorized that the two primary qualities in life were originality and genius. An original person is one who is independent of all others and is unique in all that they do, and someone who displays genius is unusually intelligent and creative. In “Genius and Originality”, Mill suggests that these qualities are indispensable in society since they prevent life and knowledge from becoming static, and without them, society cannot progress. He proposes that conformity is preventing genius and originality from flourishing, while freedom allows them to thrive.…

Art glamorizes these imitations, painting them in a positive light to the masses. Essentially, as Plato goes on to state, these imitations are a far cry from the truth. In poetry, we can see this in regards to an author's bias swinging the narrative of their poem one way or the other, or in a painting depicting war, each side presented in a positive or negative manner depending on which side the painter supports. Plato described this as good and bad, and of the danger involved wrote that "the imitator will have neither knowledge nor correct opinion about the goodness or badness of the things he imitates . . . and it looks as if what he imitates will be the kind of thing that appears good to the ignorant…

Pity for the Wild: Three Grotesques, written by Tennessee Williams and directed here at the University of Florida by Tiza Garland and Dr. Ralf Remshardt. In this production, we were given three different scenes with three different sets of actors. The scene designer Carl L. Sage seemed to have worked hard on the first scene but lacked creativity for lights and images on the second scene. Also, the directors Tiza Garland and Dr. Ralf Remshardt made smart casting choices, especially with Grace Abele who played Polly. Sage the scene designer seemed to not put much thought in the second scene.…

Residential school, a gruesome institution that includes rape, torture and abuse. Residential schools have been around since the 19th century. They were created to assimilate aboriginal children into Euro-Canadian culture, and to essentially strip them of their native culture. In both the poem, “Monster” by Dennis Saddleman and the novel, Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden, the authors go in depth on the problems with residential schools. Saddleman explains how residential school obliterates native culture, while Boyden explains how the characters horrible experiences, ironically change them for the better.…

Technology has created the opportunity for many things, before driving all the way to the store you can check their website and make sure an item is in stock. You can find out what everyone you know is doing through social media, without even actually talking to them. You can know what’s going on in the world in a matter of a few clicks. Technology has opened the door to many opportunities for many people, one more funny and silly aspect of it is memes. Faith, Imitation, and Imagination Faith, what people personally believe, exists independently of whether or not people share with others. It can be confidence in something that is not seen, such as a promise and an engagement; it can be a belief that has not been proven, for example, a religious belief shared by a group of people who work together to provide support for going deeper into their similar faith. In “God, Science, and Imagination”,Wendell Berry indicates that fundamentalists of both religion and science do not adequately understand or respect imagination, which, when properly defined, is a way of knowing as much as science or religion is. Susan Blackmore, the author of “Strange Creatures”, asserts that it is the ability to imitate…

Primate Communication Human beings are primates, as are monkeys, and great apes. Observing our nonhuman primates it wouldn't take long before one would notice the behaviors of the nonhuman primate as being very similar to a human's behavior. A person may observe similar facial expressions, physical movements, or interactions with another nonhuman primate that could strengthen a person's confidence in knowing there has to be a connection in evolutionary history between the nonhuman primates and humans. Ape-like gestures can often look very human to us at a very basic level such as shaking the head to indicate "no" or begging for food with an open hand. Although a nonhuman primate will not execute an actual complex language such as English…

Being products of evolution, nearly all living things are, in essence, products of their environment. The environment influences which traits are successful and get passed on. Before long, those organisms are directly products of their environment. This phenomenon chiefly occurs when the environment holds all the power over the organism. When it comes to humans, however, we are social animals, we influence and are influenced by those around us.…

Being myself is effortless over attempting to mimic others’ behaviors. When I am true to myself, I am not required to stress so much about anyone contradicting or having negative opinions to say when I do not choose the same decisions as them. The pressure to look like everyone around and conform to society decreases as I learn my own self worth. Showing my own character by doing what I trust is correct, dressing the way I am comfortable in and by not letting people's opinion influence my decisions , has permitted me to grow as a person. For example, I participate in activities that I enjoy and take classes that I find accommodating, to allow myself to stay true to myself.…
