This course addressed different assessment strategies, both formative and summative, to help me evaluate what students have learned in my classroom. The standard paper/pencil test to assess student learning is no longer the norm. There are various ways I can assess a student’s learning that will not take a lot of time or planning. Today’s advances in technology provide me with a broad range of different strategies. Proposition 1: Teachers are committed to students and their learning.

I regularly use rubrics and checklists to clarify what my expectations are for the assignment. This has lessened student confusion of the expectations and raised student accountability. I have also found it to be beneficial to show examples of excellent and poor quality work of former students. I cut off the names before displaying them to protect the owners of the work. After introducing the activity, we evaluate the examples together as a class and discuss what the differences are between them according to the rubric. Indicator 5d: Teachers evaluate progress to meet state and local education objectives. I am glad that I chose to do the cohort because I have found it beneficial to talk with the other teachers. My Baker colleagues and I discussed our assessment practices and how to improve them on a weekly basis. I shared many of the strategies I learned with my coworkers at Augusta Middle School. After which, I was asked by my principal to present the Questbase learning tool at one of our professional workshop days. I also learned more about my coworkers when I asked a sixth grade teacher, an eighth grade teacher, and our vice principal which assessment style they preferred to use and why. They prefer short answer/essay style questions to gauge what a student knows because the student has to explain their reasoning and it provides differing viewpoints to a topic.
In conclusion, formative assessments may be given orally, by performance, or in writing. They are quick snapshots of what a student has learned along the way and are valuable when teachers use the results to guide instruction. Summative assessments are an overall evaluation of student learning at the end of a project, unit, or school year. Assessments are an ongoing process and it is important that I continue to use a balanced combination of both in my
