Imagination is the true building block for creation. According to Albert Einstein, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand”. Inventors create new inventions after they imagine a product in their head that they believe can solve a problem or improve upon something that already exists. Back in the 19th century writers would create many imaginative short stories, one of the most popular short stories of the time was “Sleepy Hollow”, written by Washington Irving. “Sleepy Hollow” is the tale of a man who goes by Ichabod Crane trying to win over a lady and …show more content…

Stated in the article “Home Computer Access and Internet Use” on www.childtrends.org, “In 2013, almost six out of ten children, ages three to 17 (57 percent), used the Internet at home.” (“Home Computer Access”). When kids are bored nowadays their initial thought is to just go sit on the computer idly rather than thinking of new creative ways to spend their days. The more technology is being used means the less people have to use their brains because they can just look up everything they want to know. Influenced Styles Throughout history, writers have used many different styles to articulate their beliefs, and each new idea seems to evolve from an outgoing style. Washington Irving, an American author who wrote the short story "The Devil and Tom Walker", was one of many to go completely against this trend in the United States during the 18th century. He helped to introduce American Romanticism to the masses, a bold move considering that the general public still idolized Puritanical or Classicist writings. The freedom to create any story imaginable helped fuel authors to completely overhaul novels, poems, and short stories, and "The Devil and Tom Walker" is a classic representation of the changes that have occurred in American literature.…

Magical ale, haunted crews, headless goblins, and witchcraft, all elements of these two short stories by Washington Irving, used to draw the reader’s attention. Both “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” share characteristics of Irving’s love for the areas he visited as a young man, his sense of humor, and a knack for alternative plot development. These pieces more specifically share descriptive settings placed in the same region, as well as Irving’s sarcasm toward gossiping wives and older men. The two classics also share plots centered around superstitions and supernatural, as well as giving readers the opposite of what is expected from the average fairy tale.…

Irving’s use of Masculinity and Femininity Washington Irving 's famous short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has many aspects masculinity and femininity. Femininity tends to dominate the short story a lot more than masculinity does, with the protagonist being very feminine. The two main male characters in the story are Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones. These two characters couldn’t be more opposite of each other than they are throughout the story, especially in aspects of masculinity. For example, the greek philosopher, Democritus, combined common knowledge and imagination to create the atomic theory. He did not have proof to support his claim, but he thought outside the box, and made an evolutionary discovery.…
