Having Difference
Some photos can be misinterpreted and not understanding. The photos themselves are representations of how people see them. Representation is the description or portrayal of something in a certain way. Certain representations, or misrepresentations, get widely circulated by what we call the dominant discourse. Everyone has used representation to explain how things are in life to them. In the “States” essay, written by Edward W. Said, he uses pictures to represent the way that Palestinians live and how they are perceived to live. They are supposed to act and live a certain way, just because they marginalized by the dominant discourse. That shows how dominant discourse can change people’s lives and makes them be an outcast for the rest of your life. My goal for this essay is to show how people use pictures to represent Palestinians as ‘other’. This exposes the dominant discourse how the Palestinians see themselves and how they are unable to place themselves definitely within society. The photographs in the “States” were misinterpreted. With the Palestinians identity is really all they have, but it is lost. So, they think they don’t have anything to live for. The Palestinians don’t realize everyone lives for a reason. One day, they’ll be on the right track. They will not be as marginalized by the dominant discourse as they are now. This keeps them from entering the mainstream and they are considered the outcast.
