The Masque of The Red Death By Edgar Allan Poe is a take from the disease that ravaged Europe in the 14th century. The Red Death that is used throughout the story is supposed to be the deadlier version of The Black Death. The use of imagery throughout the passage enforces the dark, deadly, and inevitable force of nature that is The Red Death.
The setting of The Masque of Red Death can be depicted as dark, and ravaged by death. “After several months of seclusion, the courtiers’ entertainments climax in a munificent masked ball” (The Masque of the Red Death Stableford). “ Ultimately, the Prince foolishly believes that his wealth will shield him from the pestilence that is dealing death blows to the townspeople” (Fear and Symbolic Imagery in Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” Guercio 71). The prince tried to shut out the world and his priorities by having a lavished ball for all to participate so that it may just “blow over.” The prince and his misguidance will soon come knocking on his door as no one can escape death; no matter how wealthy.“Red Death is not a man, but the Grim Reaper, a black angel of death whose remnants of “grave-cerements and corpse-like mask” (296) are the only tangible proof of the Red Death’s supernatural, gothic existence” (Fear and Symbolic Imagery in Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” Guercio 77). As stated the masked man is no normal person but, is, in fact, an allegory for the Grim Reaper or an angel of death. The masked man who had slithered into the masquerade ball is shown to bear a resemblance to the Grim Reaper and thus enforces the statement that even with all the money in the world you cannot escape death. The story shows the prince’s misfortune that money and wealth will not give you immortality and that death is inevitable (Guercio). The use of money by the prince thought to bring immortality will soon come into the light as false.
