There comes a time when everyone is faced with a battle, whether it is a battle that requires brain, brawn, or simply charm to attain victory. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” a short story written by Washington Irving in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War, examines not only the literal battlefield of warfare, but also the perceived battlefield of everyday life or the universal theme of battle. In “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Irving uses vivid war-like imagery, tone, and plot to relay to the reader the battles faced by his characters in various aspects of life such as love, wealth, and power.

Marrying Katrina would not only give Ichabod a permanent place to stay and more than enough food to eat, but it would also considerably move him up in society. Thus, the reader can often catch Ichabod mouthwatering at the sight of the farm and the thought of pigs running about with pudding in their bellies or pigeons snugly put to bed in a comfortable pie. It is said that the more riches Ichabod discovered Baltus Van Tassel to have, the more “his heart yearned after the damsel who was to inherit these domains” and the more “his imagination expanded with the idea, how they might be readily turned into cash, and the money invested in immense tracts of wild land, and shingle palaces in the wilderness” (16). Not only does Ichabod yearn for wealth, but he also yearns for the power that comes with it. At the dinner party, Ichabod can be seen chuckling with the possibility that he may someday “be lord of all this scene of almost unimaginable luxury and splendor” (27). Even more so, Ichabod imagines the power and the ability he shall have to treat everyone as if they are his servants shall he win the heart of Katrina Van Tassel. With Ichabod’s vivid descriptions of Baltus Van Tassel’s riches and his yearning for thereof, it is nearly impossible not to notice the simultaneous battle for wealth and power that goes on
