Blessing of Peter
The sermon starts with the blessing of Peter. Peter is blessed because he knew that Jesus was Lord. These verses talk about how Christ is the Light and through a glass (the Spirit) we are able to see the Light that is conveyed to the spiritual man. Edwards goes on to show more biblical proof. He starts by stating that the spiritual man and natural man differ in the ability to see the light that is conveyed. They are different in that the spiritual man has the knowledge of God and the sight of God. Edwards backs this point up with 1 John 3:6, 3 John 11, John 14:19, John 17:3. The knowledge and sight is immediately given based on Matthew 11:25-27 and 2nd Corinthians 4:6. Matthew speaks on that Jesus came to give the light to all and show that God is faithful to give the knowledge of the glory of God. Paul writes to show that there is a discovery of the divine glory and excellence that God and Christ have. Also in Psalms 119:18 when the psalmist asks the Lord to open his eyes, the psalmist is asking to see more the light that God conveys. The product of divine light is that the natural man can become spiritual; the spiritual man sees the glory of God from the Divine Light. The darkness of the world should fall away as the spiritual man longs for more Divine Light. Those who do not have the Divine Light to see that Jesus was fully man and fully God then those people are condemned.
