The use of recurring imagery and motifs present significant meaning throughout all type of texts. The stage drama Romeo and Juliet, writing by playwright William Shakespeare first published 1595, and the adapted drama film Romeo + Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann in 1996, outlines the tragic death that occurs to Romeo and Juliet, star-crossed lovers and the only children of the Montague and Capulet household. Shakespeare and Luhrmann have included examples of heat and fire, water, darkness and costuming in their adaptions of Romeo and Juliet to present significant imagery.

Shakespeare has used heat and fire to demonstrate Juliet's beauty and Romeo and Juliet's romantic spark. In the famous balcony scene, Romeo stated that Juliet is "the sun"

Following the night Romeo spend with Juliet, he expresses, "more light and light, more dark and dark our woes" (Act 3, Scene 5, Line 36). Romeo's dialogue has reaves led how daylight causes pain and sorrow for the couple. The use of darkness has indicated how the couple'd sorrows increased as they were threatened by death, are forced to be separated during the day and only being able to interact during the night. Luhrmann has included scenes of darkness to show pain and darkness. After being wedded to the love of his life, Romeo approaches Tybalt to settle their feud in bright, sunny weather. However, following the death of Mercuito, the sky turned grey and dark corresponding to Romeo's emotions of sadness as he had just lost a friend. Romeo also felt vengefulness to avenge Tybalt for his deathly actions. Romeo's emotions continues to correspond to darkness as he discovered that Juliet had just killed herself. During the scene at the Capulet's ball, characters such as Juliet, Romeo, Lady Capulet, Lord Capulet and Paris had costumes to represent their personalities and identities. Juliet was shown to be wearing white angelic wings to characterise her purity and innocence as she is still a young girl who was yet to fall in love. Romeo was presented as a knight in a medieval suit of armour to represent how he is able to overcome any challenges, such as his family's feud, to pursue his love for Juliet. Lady Capulet was dressed as Cleopatra, a powerful Egyptian queen who had love affairs. Lady Capulet has been presented as Cleopatra to show her powerful position over Juliet. Cleopatra was also famous for her incest with her brothers, which has been demonstrated through a mid-shot of Lady Capulet and Tybalt kissing at the ball. Lord Capulet's character has been portrayed as Mark Antony or Julius Caesar, both been linked to Cleopatra. Lord Capulet has been characterised as a strong and powerful leader through a scene in which Lord Capulet ordered Tybalt to leave the guests alone. However, Tybalt defied and gets slapped by Lord Capulet. Paris was dressed oddly as an astronaut to show he is out of place.
