Illustrated children’s picture books are new way of possibly conveying to children vivid events and situations and enhance their comprehension of what is going on. Children enjoy reading picture book because whilst the adult is reading for them it has features which enables them to physically engage by including; pop-up, flap, pull-tab and textured books. Imaged and words of different kind is combined in order to form narratives for children and therefore vary enormously in both function and style. Therefore, books with pictures for children are mainly; illustrated book, picturebook and picture book. Illustrated book is decorative and intensifies the book artistically without adding any significant information to the story then we have picturebook where the story and the image is almost the same and one can look at the picture and get the meaning of the story with reading the actual text and vice versa hence they complement one another and finally picturebook as in one word, the image and word are linked and …show more content…
Moreover, it’s a controversial issue amongst critics whether the illustrated children’s book is a literature of its own or not. Thus in this essay I will be discussing Maple Segun’s quote regarding how illustrations are literature in their own right then I will be talking about how some critics view illustration book for children as something positive, then the negative side and then finally what I think about it. Mabel Segun is a Nigerian poet and writer who is also a champion children’s literature through the Children’s literature Association of Nigeria she founded it in 1978, in 2010 Segun received the Nigerian National Merit Award for what she achieved in her lifetime.
