Solutions To The Immigration Problem

Improved Essays
Immigration is a burning topic in America right now. It is a major topic in the presidential debates on how to deal with the estimated 11 million illegal aliens here in the U.S. and what should be done with the boarder. Many people and politicians think the solution is in deporting and building a wall. The deporting has been on going under the Obama administration, the highest of any president, but the issue still grows. The issue with having an estimated 11 million illegal aliens on the United States is the economic impact. The amount of funding required to try to stop the immigration at the border, deporting, and costs of not paying taxes is in the billions. Some argue that the immigration problem is not nearly as bad as it seems and may …show more content…
Whether illegal immigrant, legal immigrant, or American, because of their low education, low income, and their dependent children are eligible for welfare. Households headed by immigrants with a high school education or less have high rates of welfare use and low income tax liability. Less educated Americans also have high rates of welfare use and low income tax liability. This is an indication that it is education levels, not being an immigrant that creates the costs. There is no better predictor of one 's income, tax payments, or use of public services in America than one 's education level. The majority of immigrants come as adults so it should come as no surprise that the education level they bring with them will determine their fiscal …show more content…
It is true that less educated illegal immigrants and American both have a negative effect on our economy but this irrelevant to the immigration issue. The point is to show that illegal immigrants are not good for our economy, not compare them to Americans. As a sovereign country, the United States has the right to pick immigrants with a higher education if that is what is good for the country. Immigration is supposed to benefit the country when properly enforced giving the United States the right to enforce laws against illegal immigration. The U.S. has its fair share of low educated, low income, high welfare use individuals but the U.S. would not benefit from adding to the problem by allowing less educated illegal immigrants to stay. Advocates of Amnesty claim doing analysis by household is not accurate because the children were American born. They argue that the costs for education, welfare, and other programs that benefit children should not be counted because these children are not immigrants. The number of illegal immigrant children add up being that 80 percent were born in the United States. Skeptics completely ignore the fact that they would not be here if it were not for our broken immigration system. Advocates

Though the crises that have encouraged many immigrants to leave may have caused circumstances that prevented them from becoming fully educated or maybe even fully trained for certain positions, most immigrants are motivated to work and contribute to the economy. According to a recent study conducted by the Urban Institute, immigrants are less likely than citizens to access public welfare and government services; for this reason, they represent less of a burden than has typically been believed and which is less than that of the very people who complain about immigration (Fix & Passell 14). In fact, immigrants’ use of welfare and other public benefits has become even less frequent since the introduction of welfare reform laws that made them ineligible for many services, a policy that reflected hostile attitudes towards immigrants and the perceived economic impact they have on the host country (Fix & Passell…

Based on the information that I have analyzed and reviewed, I feel that the two are related. With the education these undocumented students are receiving is placing them in a high category for high-end positions that the US appears to be lacking in qualified candidates. Additionally, I have found that they are not getting a free education. The taxes that these undocumented workers are paying help contribute to the education system and the students are backing their education by their own funding. With these students choosing to stay in the US, they are feeding our economy and helping it grow.…

A statistical fact was proven the children of immigrants are more likely to go to college, most likely to be homeowners, and less likely to live in poverty. About thirty-six percent of the children are college graduates, eleven percent live in poverty, and sixty-four percent of them are homeowners(Balce Ceneta, 3). Based on data, a record seven-in-ten (69%) Hispanic high school graduates in the class of 2012 enrolled in college that fall, scoring two percent higher than any other race(Fry and Taylor, 1). It is greatly proven that these undocumented children that are barely entering the United States have an even greater percentage on being college graduates, homeowners, and a less percentage living in poverty (Balce Ceneta,…

There are a lot of problems that illegal immigration cause but the main problems are lost jobs, depreciated wages, stolen taxpayer resources, and increased number of crimes due to terrorism. According to a study Undocumented Immigrants’ State and Local Tax Contribution, done by ITEP undocumented immigrants paid an estimate of $11.84 billion in state and local taxes in 2012 and will increase by $840 million a year if DAPA is passed. Despite the fact that undocumented immigrants contribute billions in tax revenue every year, they have limited access to government support. Other than emergency Medicaid, undocumented immigrants don’t have access to federally funded programs such as Medicaid or food stamps. However, they do have access to Medicaid and food stamps for their U.S. born children. According to the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) immigrants with a legal status earn more than undocumented workers (American Immigration Council).…

“Immigration boosts earnings for American workers. Increased immigration to the United States has increased the earnings of Americans with more than a high school degree. Between 1990 and 2004, increased immigration was correlated with increasing earnings of Americans by 0.7 percent and is expected to contribute to an increase of 1.8 percent over the long-term, according to a study by the University of California at Davis” (National Archives and Records Administration). As seen by the statistic above, the wages of those with a high school degree or higher increases by 0.7 percent in part due to illegal immigrants which may not seem that great, however, when this accounts for over 150 million people it is no number to be disregarded. In addition to that, “Immigrants boost demand for local consumer goods.…

They have more children than most native households, but since they have less education, have lower incomes. Because of this, many immigrants turn to the welfare system for support. “By using welfare programs immigrants may strain public resources, harming taxpayers and making it more difficult to assist the low-income population already in the country. The significantly higher welfare use creates a burden on public coffers, exacerbating the nation's fiscal deficit. Welfare programs comprise a significant share of federal and even state expenditures” (Camarota, 2015).…

Many of these migrants are agriculturally culture related and in the off season return to Mexico however coyotes fees have recently made it cost prohibitive to return and many elect to stay in the United States. Increased border security has resulted in more immigrants to hire coyotes to cross and as discussed earlier the cost is a factor in the immigrant’s decision to return or stay. United States immigration policies are at the present ineffective and in fact or leading to longer stays in the United States. Public Policy on immigration must change.…

Because of illegal immigration, our nation has faced an economic downfall with having to spend a significant amount of money on border security and equipment that help them seize people and smuggled goods crossing the border. We have also had to spend money to care for the illegal immigrants, causing taxes to go up, and making everyday life more difficult. According to Alden, “The border and immigration enforcement is by far the largest budget item for the DHS” (Alden 111). I would have to agree with Melysa Sperber’s point about how our country has spent so much already on border security and it has not stopped people from coming into the U.S illegally. The reforms that I talked about earlier both include proposals of putting more money into border security.…

Illegal immigration has become a controversial topic. Its relation with poverty and crime has made it stand on a neutral position. The American government has found many different ways to potentially solve the issue but, the solutions found won’t solve the issue of poverty and crime.
