I am here today to talk about immigration.
Today more than 26% percent of the United States population is made up of immigrants, approximately 81 million people. (Zong, and Batalova. "Frequently Requested Statistics on Immigrants and Immigration in the United States").
I know what it feels like to not feel welcomed in this country. I am a daughter of immigrants, both my parents are illegal immigrants in this country. 17 years ago my parents came here in search of a better future for me. And to this day they work hard to help support me and my siblings.
My dad graduated best in his class as an accountant to have come to this country to work two jobs at minimum …show more content…

In a study of 55,322 illegal “aliens”, they found out that in total they were arrested 459,614 times, averaging about 8 arrests per illegal “alien”. Approximately every undocumented immigrant has been arrested 8 times. (Martin, "Illegal Immigration Leads to Higher Crime Rates”).
Many native born americans think immigrants steal their jobs and hurt the economy although that is not true. A study in 2006 by the NBER shows that this is the opposite, according to them the only negatively impacted have been the people without a high school diploma by only 2 percent in fact they boost the wages of 90 percent workers by 2 percent (Griswold, "There Is No Evidence That Illegal Immigrants Take Jobs from Americans").
By allowing illegal immigrants to gain citizenship or stay here legally we could prevent breaking families up. In 2011 5,100 children were taken into foster care due to this. more than 200,000 parents of children who are U.S. citizens were deported between 2010 and 2012.
