Sanctuary Cities Sanctuary cities go back to the 1970s, the concept was to protect illegal immigration through the use of laws, practices or habits. Most people think of these cities as a safe environment for illegal immigrants and refugees to go. Many of these same people feel that it is totally acceptable to allow immigrants into the United States without the proper documentation if they are in these cities. States such as California, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. have adopted this concept and the number of states and cities allowing this idea of a “sanctuary city” is continuing to grow. The IIRIRA requires local governments to correspond with Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE). But, even with the IIRIRA in place most cities have ignored the law and continued to accept the “sanctuary laws” they have made. As of recently the topic of sanctuary cities have become very popular after the murder of Kathryn Steinle, who was killed by an illegal alien, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, who was deported five different times on criminal charges only to return and re-enter the U.S. , but because of sanctuary laws he was let go. This incident has caused an uproar in the United States especially after one of the most recent executive orders that President Trump has signed in order to crack down on illegal immigration stating with sanctuary cities. The United States needs to shut these cities down due to a rise in illegal immigration, allowing illegal aliens to get off scott free from crimes, and continuing to allow these illegal immigrants to live off American welfare without paying a dime of …show more content…
there is more than 12 million illegal aliens within its borders and because of sanctuary cities they are continuing to flood in. “Illegal aliens face less risk of deportation too if caught by local law enforcement. Sanctuary policies also help shield the operations of Latin American drug cartels, gangs, and terrorist cells--since their activities are less likely to be detected and real identities uncovered by local, state, or federal law enforcement” (Salvi). What is stopping illegal aliens from coming into the United States? Sanctuary cities are a beacon for illegal immigration. Allowing these “safe havens” to accommodate to those people who violate the immigration laws set in place, encourage other aliens to do the same thing and gives them the idea that there is no need to go through the proper immigration process to get in the right way. It is not fair to not only the taxpayers of the U.S. but also to the legal immigrants that waited months or even years to get
