According to a 2008 report by the ‘Public Policy Institute of California’ on ‘The Wall Street Journal’ website, 297 per 100,000 immigrants were sent to prison compared to 813 per 100,000 natural-born Americans. According to ‘Gallup’ between 2013/2014, there was a 41% decrease in immigration but now it is 58%. Also on ‘Gallup’, in mid-2014, 33% of the people surveyed believed that immigration was a bad thing. (7)
On the other hand, one of the reasons why people are against immigrants especially illegal immigrants is that illegal immigrants had access to basic services such as health and education in California. According to ‘ballotpedia’, citizens voted for a proposition (Proposition 187) which stops illegal immigrants from accessing basic services such as health/education. Also on the website, it stated that there was a recession in California and an agency that is part of the government stated that “save the state about $200 million a year.” (8)
Also, some Americans believe that immigrants don’t mix in well with them and erode their culture and say immigrants should share the same beliefs as natural-born citizens. According to the ‘Washington Times’ which included a poll from “Reuters and Ipsos” stated that 70% of Americans believe that the US’ tradition are threatened by illegal immigrants. Also on the website, it states that in New England, citizens oppose illegal immigration the most in America and 80% of citizens in New England believed that America’s beliefs are threatened by illegal immigrants.
