Silver, the Silver Conference is held annually. The Johto League Silver Conference Victory Tournament is a Pokémon competition. The ceremony starts with someone carrying the torch, ignited by Ho-Oh’s sacred fire. Long ago, a war ravaged the region, and caused years of carelessness and hostile situations. Ho-Oh appeared, lighting a tree on fire to serve as a reminder of a low point in mankind’s history. The fire from the tree is the same flame used to light the torch.
After the Silver Conference story arc in the anime, Ash Ketchum, Brock Harrison, and Misty Waterflower decide to go their separate ways. Our defiant protagonist Ash is left alone, uncertain of what to do next. When suddenly his faithful companion Pikachu points towards the sky, and Ash sees Ho-Oh flying off into the distance. Ash notices that Ho-Oh is flying towards the Hoenn region, noting that the region is unknown to him. The Pokémon he will see, the people he will meet, the battles are all a mystery. In Pokémon: Silver/Gold/Crystal, the Clear Bell is rung to summon Ho-Oh, much like the Fenghuang is attracted to the sweet sound of music.
Leaving Ho-Oh to inhabit Ecruteak City on its’ own. Alongside Ho-Oh, is the Legendary Guardian of the Seas Pokémon Lugia perched on the very top of the Brass Tower, but once it burned down, it went to live in the Whirl Islands. Ho-Oh is based on the Phoenix from Greek Mythology, being a fire-type bird Pokémon. Its’ association with the Hold Item “Sacred Ash,” which heals all 6 of the Pokémon in your party, helps relate this Pokémon to the Phoenix.
In Osaka, Honshu, an island in Japan, there is a folklore involving the Phoenix. Mentioning how the bird rose from the ashes of a destroyed pagoda, a multi-tiered tower resembling the Burned/Brass Towers. Starting after Generation Five, Ho-Oh was given the special ability Regenerator. Regenerator slowly heals Ho-Oh as it goes through battle, referencing the Phoenix’s immortality.
