Things Fall Apart is a novel that has been around for almost 60 years it tells the story of a strong and hard working man named Okonkwo who lived in Nigeria during the 1890s. However he had to build op his wealth all alone since his father, Unoka, left him with many unpaid debts. When a daughter of Umuofia is murdered the neighbouring village decides to offer one young lad and a virgin to prevent war. The virgin is replacing Ogbuefi Udo's murdered wife while the boy has to live with Okonkwo's family. The Oracle decides that Ikemefuma must be killed but advises Okonkwo not to take part in Ikemefuma's death, yet despite the Oracle’s advice Okonkwo doesn't want to show weakness in front of his fellow tribesmen and kills Ikemefuma. Religion is a very intense thing, you have to be fully sure that you want to believe in a certain god to give up everyday things for your religion. Take the Islam for example, where you are not allowed to keep dogs as a pet inside your house. However, only in the Netherlands, 2,2 million dogs are kept as pets. So you could say one out of seven people in the Netherlands share their house with a dog. So for example you want to be Muslim and want to keep a dog, you'll have to choose between what is more important to you, religion? Or pets? This can be a very hard decision when you're not fully sure whether your current religion is the right one. Another way to doubt your religion is when you think it does not treat people the right way. Nwoye's struggle from the book is a perfect example of this. Especially after his father killed Ikemefuma Nwoye is starting to doubt the Tribal religion more and more. The Christian missionaries tell him about men living in darkness and fear while ignoring the love of god and this message touches Nwoye, who has always been a sensitive boy, deeply and a door opens to a new life.
