Recognizing the learning fashion of each individual is something Richard Felder -a Professor at North Carolina State University- encourages when he states that “students have different strengths and preferences in the ways they take in and process information” (Felder 72). Accordingly, the teaching method used to increase knowledge must directly correlate with the learning style if the information wants to be consumed. The majority of professors and teachers only focus on one specific style of learning; however, the fact is there are multiple approaches to consuming knowledge that need to be utilized. “The better [a student] is aware of [their] own learning style, the better [they] can use [it] to [their] advantage in learning” (Psycharis 93). Learning is a procedure that involves hard work and dedication; nevertheless, this process becomes exponentially easier when the correct learning style is utilized. Distinguishing the strengths that are possessed not only helps with the perception of oneself, but it can also lead to the mindfulness of ones abilities. When a professors teaching method matches that of the students learning style, knowledge is consumed more commendably. Felder affirms this saying that the “greater learning...occurs when teaching styles match learning styles than when they are mismatched” (Felder 72). Implementing every learning style into a lecture is not only problematic for the instructor, but it can also make students lose attention because of the classes’ repetitive nature. Instructors should find the “happy medium” between stubbornly employing only one learning technique and drearily executing every style of learning in a lecture. When this compromise is met, students will undeniably pay closer attention thus achieving a higher grade. According to educational theorist David Kolb, "It is more effective to design curriculum so that there is some way for learners of every learning style to engage with the topic, so that every type of learner has an initial way to connect with the material " (Kolb 31). On top of this, instructors should be required evaluate the class at the beginning of a term to discover the learning styles of each student. This in return, causes the entire class to prosper by consuming knowledge without the confusion and misunderstanding that would originally be present. “By assessing student learning styles, the successful designer is forced to employ a variety of teaching techniques in an effort to provide an optimal learning environment” (Woeste 65).
