Ignorance of Adolescents When an adolescent commits a serious crime that results in the killing of an individual, is it correct to take the adolescent’s life? Many teens had their lives taken away because of one “stupid mistake”, committing crimes because they could not keep their impulses, and emotions in check. These kids are acting under circumstances they could not control, circumstances that can influence them greatly. Some say that no crime should be left unpunished, but should these kids truly be sentenced as adults? In America, adolescents can be charged as adults if they committed serious crimes. Many of these young adults who have been sent to jail have changed for the worse. Life in prison is not meant for the undeveloped brain …show more content…
Young people who commit violent crimes should not be sentenced as adults because they do not have the same rights as an adult, they do not have a fully developed brain, and giving them a prison sentence, or a death …show more content…
It is heavily debated on why these kids are charged as adults when they cannot do many things that adults can do. If age 18 is the age where you are considered an adult in society, why change it when it comes to crimes? If minors were to be charged as adults, they should also lower the age limits to certain adult things. It almost seems like they are making it easier for people to prosecute juveniles as adults. “It’s why they can’t smoke, or drink, or go to R movies without our OK. It’s why they don’t vote. It’s why they have curfews. It’s why we fret over their internet access and fuss about driving privileges” (Lundstrom 43). The same reasons why kids can not vote, work for full time, is similar to the reasons why they should not be convicted as adults. It is immoral to have an incompetent child defend himself in court. They are not ready, and they do not understand much of the real world

Teenagers do not have the ability to watch R-rated movies alone, vote, smoke, gamble, etc compared to an adult subsequently if they are not allowed to make adult decisions or partake in adult activities they should not be convicted as adults. Additionally, children cannot finish their education in jail, nor can they continue to grow like their peers. In jail, children will be isolated from the rest of the world and not be given the opportunity to start over and become something more than their crime or mistake. People should not expect the same outcomes from two different age brackets especially when comparing adolescents to adults. Juveniles are less mature than adults, more susceptible to peer pressure, and cannot choose which environment molds them into a certain way.…

If a juvenile assumes they can take someone’s life and makes the decision to do something they know is wrong then there is no reason to take it easy on them when being given their time to serve. There are always individuals whom do not believe that juveniles should be tried as adults. In an experiment with mock jurors, “younger defendants were perceived as less accountable and less competent” (Semple and Woody 302). Also in the experiment of Semple and Woody, the defendant’s age did not affect conviction judgements; younger defendants’ were given a shorter sentence than the older defendants’ (302).
