“Is Ignorance Bliss?” Outside Reading Paper For many years, women have had trouble with freedom and their rights. Especially now, women are treated as equal as men, and in some cases more. For decades, women have dealt with unfair laws and started to become ignorant. The phrase, “Ignorance is Bliss,” is defined as, “Not knowing something is often more comfortable than knowing it.” But in this case, ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance is not bliss because women were subjected to unfair laws, gender roles, and problems concerning freedom and individualism. Unfair laws were a big part as to why ignorance is not bliss. A great example of this is in a short story called, “The Story of an Hour,” when a women named Louise Mallard found out that her husband had died in a train accident. She would come home and lock herself in her room and chant to herself, “Free! Body and soul free!”, which was then later interpreted that she was finally free. In the end she chose death rather than to stay with her husband who came home and that shows that she would rather be free after catching a glimpse of what it is like to be free [Hour, Chopin]. Another example is in a novel called, The Awakening, where a women named Edna Pontellier, who said, “The acme of bliss, which would have been marriage with the tragedian, was not for her in this world. When a women was married, she is subjected to household chores and basically loses connection with the outside world. They have to cook, clean the house, care for the children, and more. This is also how they lose their freedom when they are married. Also, women can still feel this way today. Olinka Koster says that, “Despite having more opportunities than ever before, they have a lower sense of well-being and life satisfaction,” and, “The study, The Paradox of Declining Female Happiness, said the same was true for women of different ages and whether or not they were married… Working women feel the pressure of a career and motherhood.” This is very important because it shows how women feel pressure and still don’t have true freedom. They have a lot of positions to maintain, whether it’s their job or family [Unhappy, Koster]. Gender roles are what separates men and women in everyday life. Women aren’t really free, even today. Therefore, ignorance is not bliss, even in everyday
