This has been a constant message throughout the book. In the book, people show no real concern for others. They speak of people dying, killing themselves, and killing others like it is normal. “I’m afraid of children my own age. They kill each other, too. Did it always use to be that way? My uncle says no to that. Six of my friends have been shot in the last year alone. Ten of them died in car wrecks. I’m afraid of them and they don’t like me because I’m afraid.” Pg. 113. 43. What is the difference between a'smart' and a'smart'? This quote shows that he was afraid of children killing each other, unafraid of dying, and being reckless with no consequence. In modern-day society, this is much less normalized. People, especially children, don’t commonly hit people with cars on purpose or shoot people. If they do, they will most likely have consequences for their actions, like going to juvenile jail. This is better than the society in the book because the children in the book don’t see that what they are doing is harmful and don’t face what they did, but in our world, it is not so common to get away with killing people. It is expected that you will be caught. This is better than the society in Fahrenheit 451 because there are repercussions to bad actions and people can’t just get away with killing. About the fire last week. About the man whose library we fixed. What happened to him?” “They took him screaming off to the asylum.” “He wasn’t insane.” Beatty arranged his cards quietly. “Any man’s insane who thinks he can fool the government and us.” pg. 78. 46. What is the difference between a '' and a ''? This quote shows that even a small thing, like having a book in your house, could have you sent to an insane asylum even if you aren’t insane. They are using their institutions and resources wrong, in a way that dehumanizes people. In our modern day, sending someone to an asylum is taken very seriously. You need to pass certain criteria to be sure that you can go. This is not applied to the society in Fahrenheit 451, they don’t do tests or evaluations, you just need to be found with a book in your house. Today, people with severe cases are admitted to insane asylums. They are diagnosed with mental illness and are seen as unable to take care of themselves. Modern society is better than the society in the book, in this case because people are not allowed to be so freely and on impulse. Being found with a book should not have you seen as insane enough to be sent to an asylum. There
