To the majority of Oceania’s society, being ignorant about the condition of things is actually beneficial. Being Ignorant actually helps the citizens of Oceania to remain happy and optimistic, and thus strong. To the working citizens within the Party, like Winston, their overall jobs rely on keeping the people ignorant of true facts and statistics. To the government of Oceania, this slogan means to them that the freedom of the masses is the removal of the party power. According to Oceania citizens, this particular slogan likely represents the idea that too much freedom causes one to become a slave to their senses and weaknesses. For example, the Junior Anti-Sex League is promoted by the Party who is strongly against sex; it is for reproduction purposes only, not for love and enjoyment. If someone does become free of this understanding, they would become a slave to their own sexual desires. And example the slogan Freedom is Slavery is when O’Brian is done torturing Winston in the cells, O’Brian says there is no love except for big brother, there is no laughter and there is no art, no literature, no science.
