Seeing the Light Essay
The philosophical question of is ignorance bliss, or does the truth set you free is a complex question. The difficulty to understand the question is based on what truth you’re looking for. There are different perspectives and levels of intensity about the truth. If the truth you’re searching for is a world distorting secret, compared to a little white lie, there will be two different answers to the question: is ignorance bliss, or does the truth set you free? The story, “Allegory of the Cave” by Plato, the play, “Oedipus Rex” by Sophocles, and the movie, The Matrix, produced by Joel Silver are able to answer the complex question. The truth will never set you free, ignorance will always be bliss. Ignorance is bliss as

The question of is ignorance bliss or does the truth set you free heavily relates to the world we live in today. In politics, ignorance is bliss. During the 2016 presidential elections, Americans didn’t want to know the truth of the possibility of Donald Trump becoming president. There was an outroar of emotions and protest because Americans didn’t want to believe Americans were foolish enough to vote for a racist, misogynist, and a homophobic man. In my household, ignorance is bliss. In 2014, finding out the truth about my parent’s gambling debt didn’t set me free. Finding out the truth did the opposite. I was suffocated by the truth. I allowed the truth to get the worse of me as I’m no longer the person who I used to be. I wish I can go back in time to when I was ignorance about my family’s struggles. Life would be more bearable, I would be free from the truth. Ignorance is bliss as in today’s world, people find safety, belonging, and comfort in the lies. The world we live in today is already a scary place. If you set off to find the truth, it would only create chaos in the world as there are always people who will disagree and revolt. Ignorance and going with the flow is key to surviving in this

Many people live by the phrase “knowledge is power” while others comfortably believe in the saying “ignorance is bliss”. According to Juan D. Carrillo and Thomas Mariotti, some people would rather be ignorant because “voluntary ignorance [can] be used as a self-control device preventing the individual from embarking in a hazardous activity which he [or she] could later regret,” (Carillo and Mariotti 1). These people believe that ignorance is truly blissful because knowing an abundant amount of information about a topic, or even a person, can be severely detrimental on the state of mind. One of these fervent believers is Daisy Buchanan, a major character in the novel The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald.…

It was a few years ago when I was young and wise, that someone my age but older stood and claimed jubilantly, "Ignorance is Bliss", the wonderfully dreadfully, perfect mistake people make. What is so blissful about not knowing, better yet, purposely not wanting to know truth? The idea that Ignorance is Bliss makes sense to most, I mean, yeah, the truth can hurt but think about it. Removing a band-aid fast is far better than doing so in a slow and agonizingly painful manner. The difference with knowing is that pain is temporary, pain is understood, pain shapes the future.…

Enlightenment Essay Assignment For most humans it is necessary to seek enlightenment. The quest for some to seek enlightenment may not be a easy road to travel. Gratification as well as disappointment may very well arise. It is my belief that the type of enlightenment Plato wants us to seek is true knowledge. Despite the trials and tribulations we may face, when in search of this enlightenment, we must take solace in knowing that “with knowledge comes great power “.…

The Allegory of The Matrix Famous astronomer Galileo Galilei once said that “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them”. He is a renowned intellectual as well as an astronomer, he believed in always finding the truth. He believed that it is the most important aspect of life. This is very similar to the views of Plato and the Wachowskis’, they believe that even if the truth is hidden from us, we must strive to find it. In Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" and the Wachowski siblings’ movie, the Matrix, the authors show that when man is blinded from the truth, he must embark on a challenging journey to eventually find enlightenment and better society.…

A number of individuals have recently suggested that ignorance is bliss. It has become common today to dismiss ignorance for the fact people desire to be right while dismissing other cultures, religions, or thoughts of being wrong. Americans though, do now believe in the act of dropping out of college to build their own a company being the best method, yet this process severs their path of education but also their desire to learn. In discussions of ignorance, one controversial topic was issued from Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”. On one hand, Plato argues ignorance is not bliss as there is more for us to see.…

Ignorance is a very dangerous emotion. Ignorance not only becomes dangerous when people do not think before they act but also when people let themselves be a part of demeaning life situations due to being blind of an entire situation. Blind love is an example of such ignorance; people will do anything for love without thinking, even if it ultimately hurts them. It has been said that sometimes love requires sacrifice, which can be true to an extent. Healthy sacrifice occurs when a person sacrifices their time or maybe goes to a boring event to make their partner happy, which in turn makes them happy.…

Tolstoy states that ignorance, “consists in not knowing, not understanding, that life is an evil and an absurdity” (Tolstoy). He says that mainly women and young children are subject to the category of ignorance. He views these groups of people as not being capable of pondering ideas as complex as the meaning of life. They take pleasure in licking the honey and live life in a state of ignorant bliss. But Tolstoy also states that people can only stay in a state of ignorance for so long, “something will turn their attention to the dragon and the ice, and there will be an end to they're licking”…

Between Plato’s dialogues and the Greek tragedies composed by Sophocles, there remains a rift between the idea that knowledge is the ultimate achievement versus the idea that it is ultimately the downfall of one’s mental and emotional well-being. While Plato argues that knowledge of absoluteness, true beauty, and otherwise complete enlightenment can only be achieved in fractions by means of cognitive awareness or fully after death, Sophocles presents the notion that we are better off blind to the truths of the world and of ourselves that are naturally too difficult to stomach. This presents a divide between the attainability of wisdom; whether it is tangible within life or death, whether our belief in it is impowering enough to allow us to…

Plato’s allegory of the cave is an excellent representation of misconception. Plato describes how countless people lack the knowledge in the Theory of Forms and as a result, the people are unable to turn and see what is behind them. Meaning that such people who are unable to move their heads will mistake what is in front of them for the truth, rather than try and look at what is behind them and learn from it. Whether one wants to accept the reality for what it is or stay in a blissful ignorance is entirely up to the individual. Be that as it may, this shows how some individuals would be more inclined to follow rather than lead.…
