The first topic that James Martin, SJ talked about how “it’s okay not to know”. By this he means that you don’t have to know what your next step is in life. Not everything has to be planned out to perfection, there will always be some uncertainty as to what comes next. I think that everyone can apply this to at least one time in their life. Ignatius used to be a vain man only concerned with impressing woman. But then one day on the battlefield he was struck in the leg with a cannonball. While recovering in his family’s house, all he had to read were books about saints. This changed Ignatius, eventually he became a saint. Basically a “cannonball moment” is any life changing event. Any moment that alters the course of someone’s life can be considered a “cannonball moment”. These moments are essential in shaping who people become. In the lecture, reverence was also mentioned. Reverence is having respect for and loving those around you. Treating everyone with respect and dignity allows for people to peacefully coexist with one another. Having an open heart and treating everyone the same is what reverence is. I think that reverence is an important part in shaping who a person is. If someone doesn’t have reverence then they are likely not the nicest person in the world and could lead a lonely life. Reverence is important in ensuring that people are there for one another.
