One day my mom and I were grocery shopping and I saw this old dude that kept staring at me. My first thought was, I better get away from this guy quick. Then, my mom went to go to the bathroom and I was all alone. I started going the opposite direction trying to get away from the guy until my mom got back. When she got back, we went to the register and the creepy old guy went up to me. I was ready to sock him if he did anything, but he gave me some kind of chocolate coin. The story is told through a mixture of memories and flashbacks. This means that the reader is continually moving between present and past and piecing together information in order to understand why the three principle characters think and behave as they do. A good example is the way in which we come to understand why Francis wants revenge on Larry- which we learn in chapter 1. Our introduction to Larry in chapter 4 is positive – he is described as being glamorous ‘ a smile that revealed dazzling movie star teeth’; accomplished ‘ he hit home runs’, ‘he was also a dancer’. This inevitably creates intrigue because we cannot find an explanation for why Larry would now be Francis’ enemy.…

It has been said that what we value can be determined only by what we sacrifice. This applies to several characters in Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible, especially Orleanna, Nathan, and their daughters. Through their sacrifices, characteristics and values become evident in these characters that would not be understood otherwise. The sacrifices made by these characters contribute to the novel as a whole by giving it depth and greater meaning, just as these sacrifices make each character’s intentions clear and presence throughout the novel more relevant. Orleanna made countless sacrifices throughout the novel for her husband.…

Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, takes place in a time where books are bad and freedom of speech no longer exists. People are told what to think, what to believe, and hear only what they are wanted to hear. This is a prime example of the recurring theme in this book, censorship, and overcoming a fear to do what you feel is right. There are multiple literary elements such as symbolism, represented strongly through the characters and the events they go through, which help express and solidify the themes in the book. Whether it be a terrified intellectual, a bright fire burning, or a fireman who questions his job, Fahrenheit 451 uses a multitude of symbolism to create a magnificent book of censorship and overcoming a fear to fight for…
