After a few hours of relaxing and eating, the people who were deployed, including my dad, had to head to the launch pad to take off. At first I didn’t understand what was happening until my oldest sister explained everything to me. I was still confused on why he was leaving and why we didn’t get to go with him.

Eventually, I got gifts in the mail from my dad. It wasn’t just any gift it, but a book called “If You Give a Pig a Pancake”. Along with this book was a video of him in his camouflage uniform sitting in some sort of library reading the book aloud. A few weeks later, I got another book and a video from him. I would wait for the mailman every few weeks, it was like a routine. But then, the mailman didn’t come with any gifts for me or my siblings. Instead, he came with the usual boring mail and newspaper inserts. It wasn’t like I could call him. Every time he was able to call, it was only for a few minutes. The first thing I would ask was how are you and when are you coming home.
It was scary going to bed not knowing if my dad would come home alive or injured. But, I kept telling myself be brave, you have to have courage that he will come back. So that is exactly what I did, I became more positive and lived life to the fullest. I knew deep down that’s what my dad would have wanted me to do. He would want me to not worry about him and remain
