People are not always who they seem to be. Scarlett is a sixteen-year-old girl who has been captured by a cult called Eternal Light. Eternal light believes that if they sacrifice Scarlett, it will give them a path into the afterlife. Noah is another teenager who is part of Eternal Light; he tricks Scarlett into being captured by finding a way into her heart. When Scarlett notices what is happening, she feels betrayed by Noah and cannot even look him in the eyes without her heart tearing into pieces.☺ Since Noah cannot take the feelings of Scarlett being hurt because he actually loved her, he turns his back on the community. On the day of her sacrifice, Noah and Scarlett escape into the woods. When they are found by the cult, Noah tells Scarlett …show more content…
In the book Scarlett is going through a tough time because she is finding out the truth about her whole life. The first line of the song is “Truth is harder than a lie, the dark seems safer than the light” (Battistelli). Scarlett can relate to this because at one point she wishes she could forget the truth had been told to her all together. It is also a coincidence that the lyrics say the dark is safer than the light and the cult that kidnapped her is called Eternal Light.☺ Another line in the song is “Bring your brokenness, and I’ll bring mine cause love can heal what hurt divides” (Batteselli). This line of the song reflects on Scarlett and Noah’s relationship because even though their hearts were broken, they managed to mend their love back together in the end. Noah knows that Scarlett was worth betraying Eternal Light, “Yeah, well, I love you. I always knew it, but I didn’t know how strong it was. I love you more than everything I’ve ever known, and I didn’t care if the prophecy was true and you were the key to eternal life because you deserve this life” (Preston 306).
