My major work If… is a short story exploring notions of familial relationships, ultimately enforcing the value of parents and the unchanging love families give. The title If… conveys the emotions of regret as well as the sense of bitterness in life. This mirrors what I want my major to achieve, making the audience reflect on their actions towards their family members and parents in particular as well as allow them to anticipate their future with their children. My audience is middle aged women that have established families with children, and so they are able to understand the emotions and empathise better with my characters and story. Set in Vietnam, it tells the story of a teenage girl and her mother during the 2012 typhoon Kai-tak in Hanoi. The mundane setting of Sydney encouraged the change of setting to Vietnam, which has a fair amount of typhoons and natural disasters which is the trigger for the protagonist Ai’ Han to realise her mother’s true love for her. The detailed news reports and accounts of typhoon Kai-tak allowed me to be able to fairly accurately recount some of the characteristics of the event such as the flooding and uprooting of trees which contributes to evoking a more sincere and genuine reaction. “The sky was dreary and Ai’ Han gripped onto anything that she could. But the only sturdy thing there, was the fallen tree. In a half-foetal position, the light brown water unseen by the dark skies was up to her slender collarbones.”, this extract is derived from some accounts of the typhoon, however in order to fulfil the purpose of my major which is to evoke emotions of familial love, a more detailed and emotionally evocative description has been given. Also, after consolidating with other short stories such as meaningful short films and interviews by the Jubilee Project as well as other Extension Two majors (Prufrock Café, Light of That Dawn), a structure for the short story as well as the importance for an emotionally evocative plot was apparent. This has influenced me to have a nuanced and deep plot that can be explored at a relatively fast
