On April 9th 1865 General Lee surrenders at Appomattox Court house, ending the Civil War. America celebrates until only 5 days later when John Wilkes Booth shoots President John Lincoln and causes Andrew Johnson to be president. Lincoln had very controversial views about slavery for his time. Lincoln starts out his career saying he has an “anti-slavery” opinion. This only means that he was against slavery expanding, and he actually never spoke about complete emancipation during his entire lifetime. For example in 1855 Lincoln writes a letter to his friend named Joshua Speed that says how much he hates slavery but he ends the letter by summarizing

While indeed most northerners had agreed with Lincoln’s views on the topic of slavery shown by the letter written by Phineas Hager in a letter in 1864 where he says “...the more I learn of the cursed institution of Slavery, the more I feel willing to endure, for its final destruction… After this war is over, this whole country will undergo a change for the better…” And so on and so forth. How did the Confederate States of America lose the Civil War? Though a stimulating question that deserves contemporary debate, many historians claim the reason the Confederacy lost the war is based on southern resources, military strategy, civilian leadership or the institution of slavery. However, while all explanations can be classified as valid reasons as to why the Union won and the Confederacy lost, the case can be made that all four reasons were significant causes to the final result of the American Civil War. To start, the resources used by the Confederacy can be, more or less, attributed to the presence of slavery. At the beginning of the war, one third of the Confederate population consisted of slaves (Barney 148), and it can be…

“My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or destroy slavery,” Lincoln wrote in a letter to Horace Greeley in August 1863. “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that,” Lincoln continued (Klein 2015). Lincoln’s position from being a non abolitionist to being abolitionist changed as the war progressed. He had started to believe that freeing the slaves could help his ultimate goal of reuniting the…

Slavery is a major part of U.S. History regardless of the negative reflection it puts on the United States. Slavery divided politicians, as well as states. Slavery was not the reason for the Civil War in the beginning, but it was always a main factor of the war, especially after the Emancipation Proclamation was introduced. In the article, “A Man but Not a Brother: Abraham Lincoln and Racial Equality”, by George M. Fredrickson, writes about Lincoln and his stance on slavery. Fredrickson records that Lincoln never really took a stance on slavery throughout his politician career, that he would have views for both against slavery and for slavery at times.…
