If I Stay Literary Analysis

It is common to read literature regarding a young protagonist’s quest to finding themselves and having a realization about the world around them. People always say that the youth has many paths to choose from, yet at times they do not recognize those choices and take them for granted. This is a crucial concept in “If I Stay” by Gayle Forman, for this novels describes a decision that not all of mankind is fortunate enough to get, the chance to keep living and create a life. Forman brilliantly uses literary devices such as, setting, point of view, style and flashbacks in order to convey the themes of passion and loved ones throughout the entire work. The reader is able understand the situation at a more personal level, seeing all thoughts flowing through Mia’s mind. She thinks, “I didn’t feel like I belonged with my family, and now I didn’t feel like I belonged with Adam, expect unlike my family, who was stuck with me, Adam had chosen me, and this I didn’t understand” (93). She fails to realize her worth, always doubting herself although she is an astonishing, committed musician that has a bright future at Julliard and with Adam. She always felt like the odd one in her family, from looks to music taste – they were more punk while she enjoys classical. However, she does recognize the effect of her condition on everyone involved. She notices, “[Brooke Vega is] here acting like [Adam’s] best friend. That’s the power of the scene” (139). The two only met that day because Adam’s band was supposed to open for her group, instead she ends up creating a distraction to get Adam in to see Mia. The incident is bringing people together, including strangers, friends, and family. The idea of the distraction tactic was formed by Kim and Adam, who never really got along before.
