If I Stay By Gayle Forman
If I stay takes the readers through an emotional roller coaster in the eyes of Mia Hall. If I stay author Gayle Forman wanted to let make her readers connect with the main character,Mia. She wanted the audience to feel what Mia feels. The book slowly shows Mia’s growth in the story through flashbacks of how she grew as teenage girl having the love for the cello from being quiet and reserved to having a boyfriend that was the complete opposite of who she was, and expressing herself through her music. Mia’s growth started after school was called off and the family decided to take a road trip to her grandparents and on her way to their house, there was a car accident that killed her mother, Kat, her father, Denny, and her brother, Teddy. Mia was in critical care and was on the brink of silence, but what makes this story interesting is that Mia has an out of body experience. “ There are a lot of things wrong with me. Apparently, I have a collapsed lung. A ruptured spleen. Internal bleeding of unknown origin. And most serious , the contusions on my brain. I’ve also got broken ribs. Abrasions on my legs, which will require cosmetic surgery-but, as the doctors note, that is only if I am lucky” (Forman 40).
Having to make such a physical comeback scares Mia, and she questions if she can get pass the physical barrier that is put in front of her. Mia is afraid that she will never be able to do the basic things in life let alone go to Juilliard and play the cello. This challenges Mia to grow as a person
