If I Died During The Winter At Valley Forge Dbq

Improved Essays
If I were a member of the American Continental Army and the time came for me to either quit or re-enlist, I would have quit. There are many reasons as to why I would quit. For instance, if I had survived this long, I’d probably be counting down the days to go home. Most of the soldiers or recruits could have families that miss them every single day. They would be glad to see their loved one in person rather than through a letter. I know I would myself. From Document A, it talks about how many of the soldiers had died during the winter at Valley Forge. Around 15-21% of the soldiers had died during the winter because of things such as diseases and illnesses like smallpox. Surgeons have claimed to have a way for curing us militia of smallpox. …show more content…
But I have no idea if that would work on me. Some of us could just die from that surgery anyways! I would NOT like to be part of that 15-21% who die because of the hardships of winter when I could be home with my family and survive the winter by a nice warm fire and good food on my table. Another one of the main reasons some of us might quit is because we might not like or agree some of our commanders, generals, leaders, or even some of the militia, minutemen, or soldiers. There HAD to be some of us who didn’t like or agree with others. I like George Washington but I’m shocked he never charged the Congressional Committee for his leadership. Most of us have met them at Valley Forge and we don’t like them one bit (Document B) . They’re so strict and commanding. Speaking of commanding, I know Benedict Arnold and Horatio Gates doesn’t get along either. That could really mess up our battles whenever we fight under both their commands. So I wouldn’t want to get in that drama. Also, before I was ever recruited, I had no experience with a bayonet or long range

Valley Forge was a winter camp for the colonists during December, 1777-1778. The colonists trained and fought there with courage, but some have died from diseases and lack of food. However, if I had been a soldier at Valley Forge, I would have stayed and fought with the other colonists instead of running away or quitting. One reason I would stay is because in the article “Estimates of Deaths at Valley Forge (Doc A)”, it states that only 1,800 people died out of 12,000 people in December. That is less than half of the people.…

In September of 1863 Lee experienced another bout of severe illness. During the Battle of Chickamauga, Lee experienced acute rheumatic pain which he described to be intense debilitating pain in his back. At first the general was not able to ride his horse, but his condition progressed to the point where he could not walk and eventually was completely confined to his tent (Riley 497). Lee's doctors attributed his pains to lumbago, which is simply mild to severe pain confined to the lower back; sciatica, which is pain along the sciatic nerve running from the lower back down each leg caused most often by compression of spinal nerves; or rheumatism, the inflammation and pain in joints associated with arthritis, but did not deliver a definite diagnosis. In a letter to his wife, Mary, Lee wrote: I have been suffering ever since…
