If I am a leader, what should I do to achieve that goal?
This semester we learn something about the leadership and the goal setting. We have a semester-long project, and during this project we met many problems. We tried to solve these problems with what we have learnt in lectures, and they worked exactly as we expected.
Our project is to achieve an existing building’ sustainability and each of us has a subtopic of this big project to study. We divided the project into 4 aspects and we choose the aspect with our own will. At first we think the divisions are good and we meet regularly to discuss what we have found. It is a little bit hard for me to communicate with him. When we have meetings, we discuss everything and sometimes this can take a very long time to reach one agreement. I think this is because we didn’t clearly elect a leader. We try to satisfy everyone’ thought and this is very hard to achieve. We worked in a team and the first thing we need to know is that the team’s goals and interests are higher than any of the individual’s achievements. The language is a constraint that stops us from conveying our thoughts more accurately. If I am a leader I’ll force myself to communicate with the Indian teammate frequently because talking to Chinese teammate is much easier for me. I will become a bridge between two cultures to make our meetings more fluently, efficient and precise. Also, having a conceptual understanding of the team’s goal is a very important skill of a team leader. In order to make our team perform well, for example, I will prepare for what I think we will talk in the meeting in a good language expression, and I should know more about everyone’s topic to draw the big picture. In our team, the Indian teammate is good at oral English, one of the Chinese teammate can write the report with fewer grammar problems and the other one can perform very quick doing his own work. So when dividing the team assignment I should take fully concern of all these features to help our team to achieve the goal efficiently and
