“If Everyone Cared” – Nickelback It was a very difficult choice in terms of deciding between “If Everyone Cared” by Nickelback or “One” by Metallica regarding the subject matter of human rights in popular culture. However, I decided to choose “If Everyone Cared” for several reasons. First, when listening to this song, it is also very political in its nature. Second, it is very strong in the sense of karma being in the field of human rights. Lastly, it unveils the hidden works of morality in our world today. Yes, the journey was a long one. No, it did not happen overnight. I believe that it was their hope, father time, and karma that assisted them in their venture since they knew that “Change was coming”. With the verse:
“And in the air the fireflies
Our only light in paradise”
This exemplifies that fireflies do not exert much light; in this case, hope. There was little hope for them considering that they were all minorities, but it was their knowledge about getting their word out to the general public that helped drive it into the chests of Yum! and Taco Bell. By holding these businesses accountable for their actions, they showed the world that those corporations were wrong and taught others to ‘sing’ along.
Lastly, it unveils the hidden works of morality in our world today. With the advancement of technology in the world of ours today, business and communication is done in a vastly different way than 20 years ago. Let’s look at the verse:
