The quote by philosopher Louis Althusser interprets that ideologies are rights that humans choose to create unconsciously. In many situations, performing or establishing an activity without consciousness can result in an incompetent and unpredictable situation, but not necessarily all unconscious decisions have contravening effects. Ideologies may acquire different roles in the lives of those who choose to believe them, and also the way these ideologies impact them. American Historian and social critic Morris Berman expresses “An idea is something that you have. An ideology is something that has you.” (Morris Berman). The quote by Mr. Berman supports the contrary side of ideology, that it does not always necessarily have a positive or free choice. In either case, ideologies like the one that imposes gender roles on females and males is not one that can be chosen. In today’s society, gender roles are less critical, but they definitely still exist and continue making an impact on everyday choices of an individual. “But the thing the theories do most of all is tell adults that the adult world in-which moms and dads still play by many of the old rules even as they question and fidget and chafe against them-is the way it’s supposed to be” (Pollitt 2). In agreement with Katha Pollitt, even though gender roles are considered to be immoral in some cases today, mothers and fathers continue to implement them into their children.
