In the class activity and lecture, I was fully able to understand the concept of identity. I found that with the photo you asked us to pick out and the group conversation, I understood identity and how we develop identity. My photo was a picture of me and my sister at her high school graduation, with me standing next to her in my awkward phase. This photo made me realize my identity has majorly changed since then. The main thing that I found interesting in the textbook was when the self arised with communication with family members and I especially found figure 3.1 styles of attachment on page 52 intriguing. The figure showed that if you have a positive view of others and yourself you are secure, if you have a positive view on others and a negative view of yourself you are anxious or ambivalent, if you have a positive view of yourself and a negative view on others your are dismissive, and that if you have a negative view on others and yourself you are fearful. I found it especially interesting to see where I lie on this chart. When direct definition was mentioned I realized the much of who I identified as when I was younger was determined by this concept that tells us who we are by labeling us and our behavior. Identity scripts, rules for how we are supposed to live and who we are supposed to be, are interesting because they help to shape our actions especially when we are young.
