Identity In The Legend Of Bagger Vance

Improved Essays
God wants us to be truly happy not just content, and he draws us by our desires not our simple wants. Throughout our lives we are given the task of discovering who we are. Our identity is discovered once we become our true self. This paper will examine how the characters in The Legend of Bagger Vance discover and respond to their different types of identity and how it relates to the articles that we have read. In The Legend of Bagger Vance, characters such as Rannulph Junuh, Bobby Jones, and Adele Invergordon unearth identity through their desires and actions. Rannulph Junuh, Savannah’s premier golfer, goes though constant battles with his various identities. Rannulph’s essential identity, which is his true self, is the best golfer in Savannah. …show more content…
At first he looks at the world in a depressing way after coming back from the war. Once he finds his swing, he has a positive outlook on the world and everything in it, but he is not able to do this, of course until he finds his purest self. His existential identity is brought out through the war in which we make himself believe that he can never be the golf hero that Savannah needs. Back from war and in the golf tournament, he is met by his caddy/guide Bagger Vance. Bagger Vance, throughout the movie tries to help Rannulph discover himself through golf. Bagger uses the lines “are you a golfer” and “find your swing” in which he really means that he wants him to find his essential identity. Rannulph faces more than one identity issue though. Aristotle talks about how all things in nature have a goal or purpose, which is known as teleology. Rannulph’s teleological identity is to win the heart of Adele Invergordon. This identity is shown towards the end, when he chooses to call himself on a stroke because the ball moved, showing that the game of golf is not his main objective rather it is to be a man of integrity and to be with Adele. Calling himself on the stroke also adds to his character, which is what you do when no one’s looking. Hardy Greaves saw the ball move and begged Rannulph not to call his stroke so that he could win. But he teaches Hardy that winning is not the point. Bobby Jones, also …show more content…
Adele Invergordon, is a great example of a mature identity. Since her father’s death she had been strong and independent, trying to make her father’s dream come true. In William Spohn’s article Identity and the Lord’s Supper article it defines a mature identity as “Mature people have developed the virtue of integrity: they show the same face to every group” (163). This is exactly what she does. Whether it be the townspeople or Rannulph Junuh she always kept her main objective right up front. But on the other side she still kept, her true feelings for Rannulph hidden until he found himself. From this I would say that she portrays the teleological identity because she focuses on her two main goals, to save the resort and Savannah, Georgia and to be with Rannulph again.
When it comes to these different forms of identity and a reflection on my life. In comparison to Rannulph, I feel that have an existential perspective on identity, in which as a approach college I can really deiced of what I want myself to be. But, I feel that at my age it is hard for one to discover what they truly want to do with their life and who they are. As a soon to be college student, I feel that my future experience at my university will guide me through a path that makes me happy and makes me feel like
