Since The Book Thief is a historical fiction text, the fictitious characters interact in a realistic WWII setting in Germany. Three characters in the book, Rudy, Liesel, and Death develop their identities within the parameters of the Nazi controlled society. However, if Rudy, Liesel, and Death were characters in today's society, their lives would be different.
The Main character of this story, Liesel Meminger was a 9 year old young girl , who lived with foster parents, and is a single child since her brother died on the train ride over there. As she lived with her step parents she learned many things and was very thankful. Her stepmother who is Rosa Hubermann who is married to Hans Hubermann. She was disappointed the person who delivered them because she was promised two not one. Liesel had a friend named Rudy who is a 9 years old he used to get bullied by a kid… Rudy is a kind, loving boy who likes Liesel and wants to get a kiss from Liesel. He dies in the end and gets the kiss. Death is the narrator and the guider of the story. Out of all the charachters the one affected most by the society is Max. The reason of this is because he is a Jew. At the time period and place they lived in, Nazis hated Jews. For most of Max's life he was hiding. This caused good and bad things for him. As he hides from being captured, he lands up at Hans Hubermann's house. While there Max meets Liesel and has hope in life again and even almost Faces death. Liesel and Rudy are both affected by the war in similar ways, such as their Dads getting selected to go to war. As this happens most nights they have to go the bomb shelters because of air raids. Death is affected in a huge way also. After all the deaths caused by the war, Death has to go and get all of the lost
