The chicken is considered the first relatable character in the film, it has personality and emotion and the audience are prompted to relate to it. The malnourished chicken suggests that the film is shot in a poorer area of the world. Close up shots are used in order to show fear within the chicken (Fig 9). The first minute or so of the film is made up of entirely close ups this combined with fast paced editing and audio creates a thrilling experience. The sequence uses a wide range of shots to keep the story flowing, the use of close ups of the antagonist laughing (fig 10) signifies a character we relate too as evil.…
In this essay I will be comparing ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’. The original movie ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ directed by Mel Stuart was released in 1971. Thirty-four years later in 2005 another movie based on the same book written by Roald Dahl was released, this time directed by Tim Burton. Lots of things changed in the two movies, including the characters.…
In stories, literary elements are used to help develop a theme or a main idea about the whole story in general. Theme, too, is considered a literary element. In each story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” “Ambush,” and “The Sniper,” each author uses conflict and characters to develop a theme. In the three short stories, “The Most Dangerous Game,” “The Sniper,” and “Ambush,” the authors each used literary elements throughout each story to help create a theme.…
Ever since the beginning of mankind, humans have pondered the purpose of their existence. Throughout history, a variety of philosophers, as well as authors, have asserted what they think to be the meaning of life. Philippe Petit’s To Reach the Clouds: My High Wire Walk Between the Twin Towers, Colum McCann’s Let the Great World Spin, and Wes Moore’s The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates all offer a unique outlook on the age old question of human existence.…
Scrooged, an irrefutable 90’s film about a cynical, sarcastic, and terribly witty Frank Cross deals with the turmoil of life and death in a breaking-the-fourth-wall film adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Scrooged is an interesting adaptation, compared to the usual animated family-friendly films that pay homage to the Christmas spirit. This film is not only different than the run of the mill film that copies the novel word for word, it also carries the darker tones of the classic Charles Dickens story that is unusual in contemporary Christmas films. The movie is interesting because the plot involves a live show of A Christmas Carol, while the main character Frank, deals with the same plot in his own modern reality.…
The 1985 classic film , The Breakfast Club directed by John Hughes tell us a story of five different characters named Claire Standish, John Bender, Allison Reynolds, Andrew Clark, and Brian Johnson. The setting takes place as these students end up in detention at Shermer High school where each of them is from a different clique who end up having to write an essay as their punishment. The Breakfast club is a good example of how well a story is told through a few things such as its plot , characters, and cinematography. Each formal and stylistic element plays a part in this iconic film.…
Today, the two of the most notable versions of the story of the Beauty and the Beast are Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et la Bête (1946) and the Disney animation Beauty and the Beast (1991). They are based on a French tale regarding a woman who becomes in love with a beast. Both films have their similarities and differences, but they were made for different audiences. Jean Cocteau’s film stars Jean Marais as the Beast and Josette Day as Beauty. It is recognized as a classic to French cinema and was provided for audiences of adults to reach into their inner child in themselves.…
Films, comedians and other forms of media are able to use various comedic elements in order to make their production funny, and typically entertaining, to the audience. These elements include using the unexpected or the familiar, playing with delivery and timing, double entendre, flawed plan and many others. Monty Python and the Holy Grail effectively utilizes several components of comedy to poke fun at the history and culture of the time at which the stories take place. The film looks at several stories that build onto each other as the quest for the Holy Grail. Three major elements of comedy that the film uses are using the familiar, playing with tradition and authority, and utilizing flawed plans.…
With this film adaptation and short story, we will break down the two to get a clearer understanding…

Truong interweaves the ideas of writing, cooking, sexuality and identity. Binh reflects extensively on what it means to speak a language not one's own and what it means to be forced into silence; to be exiled from a home to which one never fully belonged and identified with the very things from which one is ostracized.…
The Black Fedora’s original production of The Kris Cross profoundly exceeded my expectations. I entered the space filled with anxiety over what to expect from the experience, this was my first non-traditional theatre experience. However, I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the production from the minimalist set design to the actors who seemed extremely comfortable and confident in their work. This was the most fun I have had in quite some time. As soon as I entered the Black Fedora I was excitedly greeted by an incredibly enthusiastic young lady named Brittany.…
Ratatouille is a 2007 American film produced by Pixar that follows the journey of Remy, a young rat that aspires to be a chef, and his garbage boy turned chef friend Linguini. The whole film summarized into a sentence is basically that Remy’s dream of being a chef and Linguini 's dream of being a success is only possible in the end with the help of the other one, emphasizing the importance of collaboration. However the important take away is not this heartwarming lesson, but rather the way that global communities stereotype those with a standard American accent, such as the one used by both Remy and Linguini. According to Jessica Love of The American Scholar, European accents are typically perceived as high class and knowledgeable in foreign…
The film adaptation of the novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer directed by Tom Tykwer did a great job in resembling the novel. I felt that the film followed the novel closely, which really helped me understand the story better. Reading the novel is helpful to understand the film because the novel is the original story/script. When novels are adapted into screenplays, the writer has to do what is best for the film, which can result in the writer cutting out or changing certain things like: characters, dialogue, etc. The film helped me understand the novel better because I was able to follow the story more clearly than the novel.…
Film music, both original scores and soundtracks, manifest new modes and codes that juxtapose those that exist within unadulterated music. The modes and codes that dictate film music, much like the other forms of media within this essay, are driven by the necessity to reinforce the pre-existing narrative. Claudia Gorbman analyses the modes and codes that dictate the narrative supporting nature of film within her article, Narrative Film Music. This journal article is an excerpt from her book, Unheard Melodies: Narrative Film Music which has been published by Yales French Studies. Individuals studying or researching into methods for enhancing film narratives as well as within other forms of media are the preeminent audience for this particular…
