Identity: I Am Hawaiian Now And Forever

Decent Essays
“He Hawai’i au mau a mau.” This translates to, “I am Hawaiian now and forever.” I believe that this represents my identity of who I am as a proud Hawaiian. As a baby, I grew up learning the Hawaiian language and culture since then I’ve learned to love and preserve it. Today, there are very few Hawaiians that know our mother language. I am proud that I am a part of those few Hawaiians because I will spread my knowledge to those who do not know our language.

I agree with the statement because when a Hawaiian gets dispossessed, they are not just losing their land but their ancestral connection to the land along with their Hawaiian identity. Therefore, it is important for them to stay true their Hawaiian identity. This can be seen in the first scene of the movie when Hawaiians were in their traditional clothes and chanting in their mother tongue praying and calling for nature to restore. It was their way of healing the mother earth that was destroyed by the U.S exploitation of their lands.…

Growing up in Hawaii, you're faced with multiple fun opportunities. For my self born in Kamuela of the Big island, being in the center of the island opened up many doors to many different activities. I grew up on a long narrow road that had many bumps and pot holes up and down the entire road. At the top of the road there was a small grade hill that I would bomb with a skateboard. My house was about three quarters the way down the road.…
