According to Steele 's claims, identity contingency is based on social identity or stereotype of a person. He says that "stereotypes threat, a contingency of their identity in these situations"(Steele Claude 7). He indicates that stereotypes is the root of identity contingency. He also states that stereotype threat constantly affect us. He says " I believe stereotype threat is a standard predicament of life"( Steele Claude 5). Here, Steele reveals that stereotypes are unavoidable in our lives no matter how unpleasant they are. Likewise, Rankine supports Steele 's claim by relating her daily life experience of being distressed by negative racial stereotypes. First, she recounts her experience at a store where she is held questioned for her credit card. She states that this happens simply because she belongs to a racial minority group. She says "The men at the cash register wants to know if you think your card will work. If this is his routine, he didn 't use it on the friend who went before you"( Claudia Rankine). She reveals that the man is only suspicious of her card, but not her friend 's card since Rankine points out her friend is not questioned. As far as we know, Steeles 's concept of identity contingency reveals that people are affected by their social identity and it is unavoidable that people run in a situation which they are prejudiced with stereotypes. He says " Gerenally Speaking,contingencies are circumstance you have to deal with in order to what you want or need in a situation" ( Steele Claude). She presents her poem to honor people who are died because of racial prejudices and she leaves blank to the name spaces which are intend to honor other people.
