“Sonny’s Blues.” The Norton Introduction to Literature, edited by Spencer Richardson-Jones, 11th ed., W.W. Norton & Company, 2013, pp. 73-101. This short story is about two brothers who live in Harlem. Even though they both grew up in the same house, they both went through different paths in their lives. The oldest brother became an algebra teacher while his younger brother Sonny ends up in prison due to using drugs. The two brothers have a strained relationship and after Sonny gets out of prison, the narrator attempts to make amends with Sonny. Themes of this story include resilience, communication, and family relationships. I will be using this short story to help prove my claims regarding resiliency and using music as a coping strategy. I will be using direct quotes, summarizing, and paraphrasing multiple parts of the story to help provide evidence for my claims. I will be using the characters of Sonny and the narrator as examples.
