The American professor and critical theorist Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the word intersectionality as a term to use for many types of discrimination. She offered a definition to gender oppression, inequality in work places and society in the lives of black women; particularly in the US, a defined word that many can identify and relate to in the world today. To explain how she defined such multi categorized pattern of bias activity she used the idea of a traffic intersection. “an analogy to traffic in an intersection, coming and going in all four directions. Discrimination, like traffic through an intersection, may flow in one direction, and it may flow in another (…)…
The concept of intersectionality has made significant contribution to feminist theories. Intersectionality allows for feminist theories to account for the differences between women. This political theory allows implications for feminist theory and practice. As a result of the diversity that intersectionality has, it can be embraced by various strands of feminist theory, providing a means of cooperation between scholars who have different political views. The use of these terms shows how it is impossible to theorize about women’s lives by looking at one part of a person’s complex and multidimensional identity.…
Intersectionality is the multiple factors, which complement and compound each other to successfully suppress. Karen McCormack examines the intersectionality embedded within the term “welfare mother” in Stratified Reproduction and Poor Women’s Resistance. This simple two word term, is full of preconceived notions and intersectionality.…
Intersectionality is an outline that recognizes the interlocked nature of social identities and systems of oppression. It recognizes that individuals hold multiple identities and that these identities intersect to shape their experiences of privilege and oppression within society. Intersectionality highlights someone's experience of discrimination or privilege that isn't solely determined by one aspect of their identity but is influenced by the combination of various social factors such as race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, and more. An example of intersectionality can be seen in the experiences of a black woman in the workplace. We may face discrimination not only based on our gender, but also due to our race.…
Unexpected medical expenses resulting from health problems may threaten an individual’s financial security. Kim et al. (2012) determined that unforeseen medical expenses result in serious financial burdens and bankruptcy for middle class families. In addition, new health complications deplete wealth and increase debt for the 50 to 64 age group. Correspondingly, scholars also determined that individuals in good health have two-and-a-half times more financial assets than those in poor health (Lahey et al., 2004).…
The viewpoints held by persuasive writers are often different from each other’s, sometimes even polar opposites, but the one thing all persuasive writing has in common is the use of rhetorical appeals. Ethos, logos, and pathos help authors convince readers of a point using credibility to impress the reader, reason and logic, and emotion to appeal to the reader’s sympathy. However, overuse of certain appeals can lead to an unreliable argument. Logos is the most reliable, as logos depends on facts, but information may still be twisted. Ethos deals with the credibility of the author, publisher, or a source from the writing, but sometimes credentials can blind readers; just because someone is an expert in a subject does not mean he or she is infallible.…
The existence of health insurance have given many a relief, a “free-ride” to hospital and meeting the health care needs and putting debt into monthly payment plans. Nevertheless, it was not enough for many; the problems are the high-cost of services, cares, and treatment are out of their reach.…
We cannot continue to ignore disability when talking about intersectionality, especially in the media. Disability makes up 20% of the population and yet the needs and representation of the disabled are often ignored to fight for other equally important statuses. We cannot forget that disability is a defining factor of a person’s identity and should not be ignored in lieu of other identities. As stated before, intersectionality is the interaction of all different identities that create a person’s specific experiences and hardships. When discussing Black Lives Matter and other such movements, we cannot decide that race is the only factor involved in making up this experience.…
To my understanding, Intersectionality is the concept of categorizing individuals based on their social and cultural characteristics.…
Understanding intersectionality is something that is important in the practice of social work. One must be able to understand and deal with one’s clients and their specific positions in life and understand how all of their different identities and places in society interact with each other. However, before one can understand intersectionality in others, one must examine the different areas of one’s own life and how they interact to form a unique identity. I will examine my specific roles in life and how they interact with each other going forward, specifically regarding gender, ethnicity and nationality, race, sexual orientation, abilities and disabilities, class, and religion.…
Stories that relate to social justice are in the news constantly, ranging from how different races are treated by law enforcement all the way up to decisions that are being made by our president. The principle of social justice indicates that all people that are in the same circumstances should be treated equal and people in different situations have the right to be treated differently (Dolgoff, Harrington, & Loewenberg, 2012). The article I found is about President Trump reversing the abortion-related U.S. Policy which bans funding to international health groups. This is a rule that is banning funds to nonprofits in foreign countries when it comes to abortion (McGinley & Goldstein, 2017). The article goes into how this rule has been changed…
Intersectionality is a conceptual tool used primarily for analyzing key differences in various environments and situations. Feminists use this term to critically analyze the patterns of oppression that interlock with multiple identities, such as social inequality in its complex forms. Bromley, in her writing, explains that the societal categories that define one 's identity and status quo further enables the development of hierarchies, and unearned privilege. Identity markers such as gender, sex, class, and race are socially constructed factors that further put up barriers of inclusion and exclusion for the individuals of society. In order to explain the root of the problem or offer a solution to eliminate these constructive barriers, one must…
Many believe that gender oppression is based purely on gender. Gender oppression, however, goes much deeper than that. Many things contribute to gender oppression. The idea of intersectionality can be used to explain this. Intersectionality is the concept that many factors come together to contribute to oppression.…
Appendix 2 is an example of another poster from a campaign about rape, but it differs from appendix one as it stands with a more feminist view point. The poster is very much on the side of the victim and recognising them as such, rather than blaming them for being raped. The text is incredibly important as it is reassuring the victim that they are not to blame, that they did not deserve to be raped, and that they will be believed if they chose to confide in others. Intersectionality can be applied by looking at the image on the poster. If you assume the poster suggests that the woman was raped, you can start to identify why she may have been targeted as a victim.…
Two examples of intersectionality include, minorities have always had to fight for their equality, whites never had. The other example is that whites have always been known for inheritances, while minorities never had anything like that. Whites have always known to be the rich people, minorities represent the lower and middle…
