The five and seven-year-old participants had an equal understanding of moral quality. This suggest that age is a significant factor in understanding moral quality and motivation differentiation. The results for the punishment measurement also found that the four-year olds were significantly worse at differentiating the levels of punishment for the characters than the five and seven year olds. The five and seven-year olds also differentiated at the levels of punishment equally. This indicated that overall between the ages four and five, the ability to differentiate punishment levels improve significantly during these developmental ages. However, the behavior-disordered seven year olds performance did not score higher than the four year olds on both measures. The behavior-disordered children performed significantly worse in the second-order false-belief task than the average developing seven year olds. This suggests that behavior disorder children have more difficulty with understanding the mental states of other people. The researchers also found that the scores from the second-order tasks correlated significantly with the children’s act evaluation score. This indicated that the behavior problem children along with typical developing children’s motivation-based moral reasoning and mental state understanding positively correlate. The results from the teacher’s report indicated a positive correlation between the prosocial behavior and peer competence subscales. There was also a positive correlation for relational aggression and the overt aggression. The results also signify that the five year olds performance on the moral reasoning task correlated negatively with the teacher reports of overt aggression.
