The event that stood out the most to me during my clinical experience this month was when one of my patients began to complain of a sudden onset of intense abdominal pain, then later had a fall while off the unit.
Explain the circumstances surrounding this event (who, what, when, where, and how).
My patient was a 72-year-old male with a J-tube placed for feedings. It was my third day caring for the patient and we had received orders on how to increase his tube feedings as long as he could tolerate it. The patient never complained of pain during my previous shifts, but suddenly during the shift, the patient started complaining of stomach pain. He had an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. Me and my preceptor contacted the patient’s physicians and the RRT. Test were ordered and we closely monitored the patient. Soon after, the patient had a massive bowel movement and no longer felt the abdominal pain. His vitals decreased to their normal range and the patient was no longer in distress. Transport came to get the patient for the test that were already ordered and while downstairs the patient fainted and hit his head. Eventually …show more content…
I felt a little overwhelmed at what was happening, because we also had four other patients that needed our attention as well. Luckily, my preceptor was there to walk me through the situation and teach me along the way.
What were your strengths for this clinical experience?
My strength during the experience would be teamwork. Me and my preceptor had to work together during the situation to make sure all of our patients would receive the care they required. When the patient had a fall, my preceptor had to leave the floor to deal with the situation. I was left to tend to the other four patients, which I believed I handled well.
