Identification and selection of suitable cultivars and traits responsible for tolerance is the major target for plant breeder’s and physiologist. Several research groups have been involved in identification of QTLs by adopting different phenotypic and genotypic techniques from diverse genetic background of Oryza gene pool. By using diverse mapping populations of different genetic background RILs (Ni et al. 1998; Wang et al. 2014), NILs (Wissuwa and Ae 2001; Wissuwa 2005), DHs (Feng et al. 2000), F8 (Shimizu et al. 2004), BILs (Lang and Buu 2006), BC2F3 (Nguyen Thi Lang et al. 2006), CSSLs (Shimizu et al. 2008) and IL (Li et al. 2009a) several QTLs/ or genes responsible for the P deficiency were reported.
A recent breakthrough in the controlling phosphorus uptake under low phosphorus-tolerant varieties was facilitated by the application of a novel breeding approach. Number of independent research groups have carried out various studies using the low phosphorus tolerant traditional aus type Kasalath and found major QTL Phosphorus uptake 1 (Pup1) and several other main effect loci about a decade (Wissuwa et al. 1998, 2002; Shimizu et al. 2004; 2008; Li et al. 2009; Van Kauwenbergh et al. 2010). The Pup 1 QTL is considered as one of the promising QTL exploited for the development of phosphorus deficiency tolerance in rice breeding program.
